RESIDENCE FOR FAMILY MEMBERS
EU CITIZEN'S CERTIFICATE

It is a 5-year residence permit for non-European family members who accompany or join a citizen of:The European UnionThe European Economic AreaSwissIt allows:Residing in Spain for 5 yearsWorking for someone else or self-employed without restrictionsAccess to public services, education and healthcare on equal terms

According to Royal Decree 240/2007 and the 2025 guidelines, the following family members of the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen can obtain this card:✔️ 1. SpouseAs long as there is no divorce, annulment or legal separation.✔️ 2. Registered coupleRegistered in a public registry of a member country.✔️ 3. Unregistered stable partnerStable and continuous cohabitation must be proven.✔️ 4. Children of the EU citizen or spouse/partnerUnder 21 years oldDependent elderlyChildren with disabilities✔️ 5. Ascendants (parents or grandparents) of the community member or their partnerWhen real economic dependence is proven.✔️ 6. Other family members (exceptional cases)Provided that dependency or cohabitation in the country of origin is demonstrated.

Here's the key new development of the year:From May 2025, family members of Spanish citizens no longer fall under the EU regime , unless the Spanish citizen has exercised free movement (lived/worked in another EU country).In all other cases, they must apply for the Residence Authorization for Family Members of Spaniards (form EX-24), created by the new Regulation 1155/2024
