It's common to confuse these concepts. Here's a quick clarification:
EU Certificate: proves legal residence of European citizens
NIE: administrative identification number
TIE: Residence card (only for non-EU citizens)
EU citizens do not have TIE cards , except in very specific cases of non-EU family members.
Does the certificate expire?
No. The EU Citizen Registration Certificate does not expire , although:
The NIE always remains the same.
It is mandatory to report important changes (such as address)
After 5 years of continuous residence , the right to permanent residence is acquired.
General requirements to obtain it
Requirements may vary depending on personal circumstances, but usually include:
Valid identity document or passport
Justification of the reason for residence (work, studies, financial means)
Census
Payment of the corresponding fee
It is always recommended to check for updated requirements from official sources.
Conclusion
The EU Citizen Registration Certificate is a mandatory procedure for Europeans who want to live in Spain for more than three months. Although the process is simpler than for non-EU citizens, it is a key step to reside legally and carry out procedures without problems .
