LEFT OUT OF SPAIN'S EXTRAORDINARY REGULARIZATION? THE TRAINING-BASED ROOTS PERMIT MAY BE FOR YOU

Between 16 April and 30 June 2026, Spain ran an extraordinary migratory regularization process. Many people obtained an authorization through it, but many others were left out: because they arrived in Spain after 1 January 2026, because they couldn't prove five continuous months of residence, or simply because they missed the application window.
If that's your situation, the good news is that this wasn't your only door. The arraigo socioformativo (training-based roots permit) is an ordinary, permanent route under Spanish law, available year-round, and it may be your next step
Why you may have been left out
The most common reasons are: arriving in Spain after 1 January 2026, being unable to prove five continuous months of residence immediately before the application, missing the deadline (closed on 30 June 2026), having a criminal record, or already holding a different administrative status not covered by this specific process.
What is the arraigo socioformativo?
It's a temporary residence permit granted on exceptional circumstances, regulated under the reform of the Immigration Regulation (Royal Decree 1155/2024), designed for foreign nationals with continuous residence in Spain who commit to training in a field with real employment prospects. Unlike the extraordinary process, it has no application window: it can be requested at any time, provided the requirements are met.
Main requirements
Two years of continuous residence in Spain, with absences not exceeding 90 days in total.
Being enrolled in, currently taking, or committing to complete an authorized training program: post-compulsory secondary education, vocational training, professional certificates, training linked by Spain's public employment service to hard-to-fill occupations, or adult education. At least 50% must be in-person.
No criminal record, and no entry ban into Spain.
A social integration report issued by municipal or regional social services.
Duration and work rights
The permit has an initial validity of one year, renewable based on academic progress. During that year, the holder may work as an employee up to 30 hours per week, and the job doesn't need to be related to the training being pursued.
What happens after the first year?
There are two paths: an extension, if you've finished or made progress in your training but are still job-hunting; or a modification to a residence-and-work permit (Article 191), if you already have a solid job offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for the arraigo socioformativo if I didn't qualify for the extraordinary regularization? Yes, these are independent routes.
Do I need a job already to apply? No, you need to be enrolled in or committed to an authorized training program; work rights (up to 30h/week) come afterward.
Will there be another extraordinary regularization? There's no guarantee of one, or of when it might happen. The arraigo socioformativo, on the other hand, can be requested now if you meet the requirements.
